One thing that annoys me is a color scheme that makes the text too hard to read. Problem is usually a lack of contrast between colors. Dark gray text on a black background or yellow text on a white background, etc. Having a background image that makes overlaying text impossible to read (came across many pages like this on MySpace).

I find it ironic that excellent UX has led us all to become so lazy with websites that #7 is even on the list. That said, I truly hate when I can't press ENTER to submit a form.

Other things that keep me from otherwise great and useful websites (example, DeviceKnit had, when they started, a very innovative idea of being a 'cookbook' for your electronic devices) are lack of clear navigation. I went to the site, signed up, and didn't know where to go. This is also part of UX, though, because your job as a UX designer is to really create the experience for the viewer, so that they don't have questions like "where to next?"

But, for better or for worse, we were given User Experience Designers, and they have made the World [Wide Web] a much better place for us, while at the same time making us (in a way) too discriminatory against a bad design, or a bug in development.

Then again, how could you blame our short attention spans on the web? Just like MTV has ruined any cut longer than eight seconds (or so they say*), we internally have no patience for websites that just don't cut the mustard.

* I don't really know who they are anyway, or if they even said that.

Two of which you identified also turns me off in regards to websits: too many pop ups and tacky fonts. Neither are necessary. Tacky fonts are not going to entice the reader and the pop us are not entertaining.

Does that still happen?! I remember that being a big no back in 1999, even. I'm surprised people never listen.

Or is this because sites like MySpace let the bands' music play immediately, that a new generation of amateur auteurs think it's cool again?
